Hello! I'm excited to begin this journey of making my dream of Girls Initiatives for Science and Math Opportunities (G.I.S.M.O.) a reality. Investing in girls means investing in our future. It is my hope that our programs and presence in the community will provide a firm foundation for girls to pursue their interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. (STEM)
I am a native of Shreveport, Louisiana and a product of Caddo Public Schools. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology Pre-Med from Grambling State University and a Master of Education from Louisiana Tech University. I have been employed as a science teacher for Caddo Public Schools since the year 2000. I currently serve as a Master Teacher of Science.
I have always loved all things science! Yes, you guessed it! I'm a geek and I wouldn't have it any other way. As an educator, I have spent countless evenings, weekends, weeks, and summers in conferences, workshops and summits on science. I learned many wonderful things to share with my students and I met some fantastic people. As I reflected on my experiences, I realized that I had not encountered many people like myself. There weren't very many women and few in that number were women of color. I began to think about how underrepresented women are in STEM fields and that women of color are almost nonexistent. So, I decided to use my gifts, talents and sphere of influence to change that!
G.I.S.M.O. is dedicated to providing equal access to quality STEM education, inspiring girls with role models, and closing the STEM gap for girls by overcoming both self-imposed and cultural barriers. This will prepare them to engage in subjects that will lead to STEM careers. Please join us! I believe that Girls + STEM = Success!
